Posture Correction Q & A

What Exactly Is Posture Correction?

Posture correction includes a number of different methods that healthcare providers, including chiropractors, use to adjust and correct patients’ postures. Having good posture is aesthetically a good thing, but the main goal of posture correction treatments isn’t just to improve a person’s appearance. It’s to help prevent and alleviate pains, aches and other health problems that people are at risk for if they have chronic poor posture.

Chiropractors and other healthcare providers have a number of ways that they can help people correct their posture. Depending on a person’s particular posture, a chiropractor or other provider might recommend:

  • Back, neck and shoulder exercises

  • Ergonomic desks, chairs and other pieces of furniture

  • Posture correction devices, such as braces

  • Surgery

Surgical procedures are reserved for when other treatments aren’t sufficient. Usually, non-invasive procedures, like those offered by chiropractors, are able to provide the posture correction that people need. Surgery is only rarely necessary.

Who Provides Posture Correction?

Chiropractors, physical therapists, and doctors are all able to offer posture correction. Chiropractors, however, are especially qualified to help people correct their posture. Chiropractors specialize in the musculoskeletal system, studying the spine in particular. They’re able to identify misalignments in bones, and they can often perform adjustments to correct any misalignments that a patient has.

Who Can Benefit From Posture Correction?

Almost anyone can benefit from seeing a chiropractor or other provider for posture correction. Anyone who has poor posture can improve the way they sit and stand so that they don’t develop health problems related to their posture. If they already have health issues related to their posture, posture correction procedures may be able to alleviate their symptoms. Even people who have decent posture may benefit from minor improvements that a chiropractor or other healthcare provider can help them make.
