Spinal Decompression Q & A

What is spinal decompression?

Over the course of the day, people are exposed to a variety of compression forces. Sitting, running and even gravity can have an effect on the spinal discs, forcing the spine to press into the discs, causing pain in the neck and back and radiating numbness and tingling down the arms and legs. Spinal decompression, also known as “traction,” is a non-surgical therapy that treats such pain. Not only is it successful in alleviating pain, it decompresses the spine’s discs and joints, allowing nerves to communicate with the rest of the body effectively.

What does spinal decompression feel like?

Spinal decompression is designed to be gentle and painless. The patient lies on the traction table and is fitted with a device that simulates zero gravity. A computerized system calculates the amount of force necessary to reduce compression in the spine without causing muscle spasms. The spine is gently lengthened to its proper position, and the discs are allowed to return to their appropriate size and shape. During each session, the process takes between 10 and 15 minutes, and most patients describe it as a mild stretching sensation in their back and neck.

Why is spinal decompression more successful than other treatments?

Unlike surgery, spinal decompression is non-invasive and has very little risk associated with it. Unlike conventional drug therapy, decompression has no side effects and treats the spinal problem at its source. Instead of masking pain with medications and rather than resorting to risky operations, the patient’s body is given the tools it needs to heal itself. Decompression alleviates pain at the side of the spinal discs, but it also alleviates compression of the spinal nerves. This combination allows the body to function the way it should in other ways, not just at the site of the patient’s pain.
